Presidential Concern: Glaucoma & Eye Issues

American flag

Because they don’t have aches and pains, the eyes don’t often get the care and attention the rest of our body does. But when something goes wrong, we notice it right away.

That’s especially true when a well-known celebrity chooses to make his or her illness or condition public, which boosts awareness of the problem. And when that person is the President of the United States, the public-information blitz that follows can improve the quality of life for thousands of people.

In 1990, President George H.W. Bush was found to have an early glaucoma of his left eye. Bush was very forthright about the condition, and publicized both his diagnosis and the medication regimen he would undertake to treat and control the condition.

Even though President Bush has only been out of office 20 years, much has changed in eye treatment options since then. New research is constantly making strides toward a cure and new medications continue to find their way to market. So if you believe you may be suffering from glaucoma, or are having any problems at all with your vision, be sure to contact your eye care professional for a check-up right away.
