Protect Your Eyes Against The Effects of Aging

While it’s a fact of life that aging brings with it some physical challenges, there are things we can do to lessen, and even stave off, its effects.

Take eyesight, for instance. Older eyes are more prone to conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration, but there’s plenty we can do now to boost our eye health. And even if we are suffering from the early stages of these conditions, there’s still time to make some positive changes.

New studies have shown that macular degeneration, which begins as a dark spot in the center of your sight, and then spreads out over the entire field of vision, may respond to vitamins and antioxidants. In research published in the Archives of Ophthalmology, scientists say that a high-dose supplement of vitamins C and E, beta-carotene and zinc greatly decreases the risk of macular degeneration leading to blindness.

When it comes to cataracts, you may already be preventing them with some healthy lifestyle choices. Not smoking (or stopping if you do), staying out of the sun and wearing sunglasses when you are out, avoiding excess alcohol and eating plenty of fruits and vegetables all are methods to avoid cataracts.

Of course, seeing your eye care professional regularly is the best way to stay on top of your vision. Be sure to see yours for regular examinations.
