Glaucoma, a disease associated with high pressure within the eye and damage the optic nerve, is a leading cause of blindness in the United States. Unfortunately, it often has become severe before people seek treatment, so it’s smart to know what some of the symptoms are, so you can seek help if you think you may be developing the condition.

There are two major types of glaucoma: primary open-angle glaucoma and acute angle-closure glaucoma. They both damage the eye but have very different symptoms:

  • Chronic primary open-angle glaucoma produces very few symptoms until the disease is very advanced so it is important to have regular eye examinations to detect it before it causes dimming of vision and loss of peripheral vision.
  • Acute angle-closure glaucoma causes severe eye pain, nausea and vomiting, the sudden onset of visual disturbance, blurred vision, halos around lights and red eyes.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, whether alone or in combination, contact your eye care professional immediately and set up an appointment. If you don’t have an eye doctor, click here to find a treatment center near you. Glaucoma is treatable, so the quicker you take steps to arrest its progress, the better.
