Eye Safety Is Easy To Overlook During Wintertime Holidays

It’s not every day you wrestle a live tree into the house, so keeping branches out of your eyes usually isn’t a big concern. But during the holiday season, it’s easy to irritate or injure the eyes if you’re not careful. Here are a few tips to keep everyone seeing clearly throughout the winter season:

  • Kids love shiny things, so don’t keep breakable ornaments or those with hooks on lower branches, unless they’re securely wired in.

  • Spray snow may be pretty, but it’s also full of caustic chemicals. If you use it, be sure to wear safety goggles.

  • Keep those goggles on when skiing, snowboarding or even having a snowball fight. The ice in snow is sharp and can scratch unprotected corneas.

  • Don’t sit too close to the fireplace, as popping logs can send out sparks.

Your eyes are really good at taking care of themselves, but sometimes they need some help. If you’ve got something in your eye, the tears it produces usually will wash it out. If not, rinse out your eye with warm water, or carefully pull out the eyelid and use a clean cloth to pick up the offending particle.

A little caution on the front end will ensure that you’ve got both eyes focused on all the wintertime fun this year!
